Born i<\/strong>n Vit\u00f3ri<\/strong>a d<\/strong>a Conquista, Bahia, Ricardo Castro is a pianist, conductor, educator, and cultural leader, <\/strong>with a life dedicated to the transformative power of music. For nearly five\ndecades, his artistic journey has spanned the world\u2019s great concert halls,<\/strong>classrooms, and social initiatives<\/strong>-<\/strong>from solo performances with renowned orchestras to visionary projects that shape <\/strong>new generations.<\/strong><\/p>

He quickly gained international recognition, winning first prizes in competitions\nsuch as the Rahn Competition (1985), the Pembaur Prize (1986), the ARD Competition in Munich\n(1987), and the G\u00e9za Anda Competition in Zurich (1988).\nIn 1993, he won the Leeds International Piano Competition, becoming the first and only South\nAmerican to receive this honor. The victory led to performances with orchestras such as the\nGewandhaus Orchestra of Leipzig, the Tonhalle Orchestra of Zurich, and the BBC Philharmonic,\nas well as collaborations with figures like Sir Simon Rattle, Martha Argerich, and Maria Jo\u00e3o Pires.<\/p>

His work extends far beyond the stage into conducting, education, and cultural\nentrepreneurship.<\/strong><\/p>

In 2007, he founded NEOJIBA (State Youth and Children\u2019s Orchestras of Bahia), a pioneering\nsocial program offering free orchestral<\/strong>and choral training to thousands of children and\nyoung people throughout Bahia. Through this initiative,<\/strong>he has become an international\nreference in social transformation through music.<\/strong><\/p>

Alongside his artistic and social commitments, he maintains a strong dedication to education. He\nhas taught piano in Switzerland since 1992, first at HEMU, and since 2020 at the Haute \u00c9cole de\nMusique de Gen\u00e8ve (HEM), where he is currently Head of the Keyboard Department.<\/p>
