At the heart of Europe, we encounter Johannes Brahms through his exquisite final sonata for clarinet or viola and piano, a work that brings his chamber music output to a close. Composed alongside the remarkable piano pieces Opp. 117, 118, and 119, it radiates an infinite tenderness.
The celebrated work inspired by Romanian folk themes by George Enescu completes the first part of the concert. It is an initiatory journey into the land of the lăutari, leading us through mountains and along country roads, into villages where peasants dance with birds and dream beneath the light of the full moon.
Finally, the masterpiece by Robert Schumann brings the evening to a close with his famous Piano Quintet—a work that would later inspire composers such as Johannes Brahms, Antonín Dvořák, and César Franck.
