“Impossible Love” is the guiding thread of this concert, embodied by three composers whose lives were marked by unfulfilled passions. Franz Schubert, who never experienced true love; Johannes Brahms, deeply in love with Clara Schumann; and Ludwig van Beethoven, solitary and torn by contradictory emotions.

These impossible loves, these restrained tendernesses, infuse their music with a deeply moving beauty. The Sonata No. 3 in A major, Op. 69, is the first work in which cello and piano engage as equals, and it remains perhaps the most popular of Beethoven’s five cello sonatas.

The Piano Trio No. 2 in E-flat major, Op. 100, is one of Schubert’s final works, written before his untimely death at the age of 32. A flowing current of vitality and poetry, its slow movement has been featured in numerous cinematic masterpieces, including the cult film Barry Lyndon by Stanley Kubrick.

To conclude in apotheosis, Brahms’s Piano Quintet—often regarded as the crown of his chamber music output—stands as a pinnacle of the repertoire, blending passion, dramatic tension, and lyricism.
